The
movie "Rainman" acquainted society with the term savant. Tim is
a savant, with remarkable talent in the performing and visual arts. His
story is extraordinary, and lends hope and encouragement! An overdue
delivery and traumatic 48-hour labor lead to the use of forceps on June 23,
1952. Tim sustained damage to the lower left lobe of the brain.
Results of tests by specialists, at school age, gave the same prognosis; he was
given no hope for a meaningful life outside of an institution, least of all that
he should contribute to society. However, his accomplishments far
surpassed those predictions! He was institutionalized at the age of 13 for
a diagnostic study which revealed "mild mental handicap with light Cerebral
Palsy." Tim's arms and hands were very uncontrolled in early
years. His coordination was so poor that getting his two index fingers
together was only accomplished with great effort, and tying his own shoes came
very late in his life.
