Piano Paralympics

The Institute for Piano Teachers and Disabled in Japan organized and held its first-ever International Piano Paralympics, January 9-10, 2005. Pianists from all over the world with all kinds of disabilities performed at the Yokohama Minato Mirai Hall in Japan.  Among the performers was our very own Tim, who captured a gold medal at the event.

It was a wonderful event and trip to beautiful Japan.  For the January 9 performance, Tim wore  black slacks, white Tux jacket, and a sequined USA flag vest,  When introduced as the  USA representative he walked to the center of the stage, bowed and as he came back up he took both sides of his jacket and pulled them to the left and right.  A full blast sequined US flag!  Laughter and applause!   He began with Small World and as soon as he played a few notes the audience started to applaud.   It is a song loved world-wide!  When Tim played How Great Thou Art, the feeling he felt was felt by all and at times the piano rumbled.  Rosemary was in tears thanking God, and there was no doubt the audience loved it.

The January 10 activities included the judging of section “A” for the song SAKURA SAKURA.  There were several intermissions as there were many participants in this section.  Though it was the same song performed, all arrangements were those of the pianist.  Tim started his with one finger of the right hand - playing the 14 measured melody.  Then he played it as he called a Regular way, followed by Semi Classical, Jazz, Waltz, March, Blues, and lastly as Autumn Leaves Style.  He stated between each song how he was going to play it  This is the song for which he received the Gold Medal.    It was a moment like no other and tears of joy flowed.

There were interviews after and a reporter asked Tim about playing. “I don’t take my career or talent lightly, God gave me my gift and I give Him all credit.”

Tim just recently competed in the 2007 Piano Paralympics held in New York City, December 1-7, 2007.  Click on the link below to view the documentary that was made featuring Tim.
